The origins of the Zoo Tower are rooted in commerce. The original building, across from the Beijing Zoo, was once a wholesale clothing market, housing a variety of small vendors on all floors. Soon this renovated, LEED Gold building will support companies at the leading edge of technology based financial services.
At 28 stories, Zoo Tower is a landmark in Beijing’s Xicheng district—a newly designated high-tech enterprise zone. A bold, sculptural roof connects with the contours of the original structure; it also capitalizes on branding opportunities inherent in its height and proximity to Beijing’s second ring road. The canopy at the street level clearly defines a grand new central entryway, making it easy for people to find their way into the building.
Inside, the design innovatively maximizes a limited floor to floor height (just under 12 feet), with a compact raised floor system that still allows wiring and air flow ducts to run underneath, leaving the ceiling uncluttered. The nature of the FinTech industry means employees work long hours. Two floors of underground parking, a gym, canteen, retail, and living room style gathering zones help create a workplace environment where people can take a break, or break up their work day by collaborating in spaces away from their desks.
