Taking Home 1st and 2nd: GBBN Wins Two Metamorphosis Awards

Retrofit Magazine has announced the winners of its third annual Metamorphosis Awards—an award honoring outstanding work retrofitting commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings—and GBBN won two honors.

Retrofit’s panel of judges recognized GBBN’s designs for the Roundhouse at Hazelwood Green and Pittsburgh’s Contemporary Craft as the first and second place designs, respectively, within the category of Adaptive Reuse.

Part of the shuttered, 178-acre J & L Steel Mill, the Roundhouse at Hazelwood Green originally serviced and turned train engines, redirecting the materials they carried to different stops in the production process. While preserving the rich material palette and dramatic volume of the Roundhouse, GBBN’s design transformed the space for the comfort and needs of OneValley’s tech researchers and entrepreneurs.

Helping Contemporary Craft make its new home in a formerly industrial, concrete box, GBBN transformed a nondescript building into a center for art, craft, and community. Working within a modest budget, the design prioritized opening the building up to the outside while turning the whole space into an expression of the power of craft.

Both projects exemplify sustainable design by extending the life of existing structures and both enrich the lives of their surrounding communities. These are core values at GBBN, and the whole firm is pleased with these recognitions.
