Many urban healthcare campuses face the challenge of how to expand within a defined footprint. This master facilities planning and renovation project is addressing growth challenges on many fronts including clarified wayfinding, improved concourse and amenities, an expanded cardiac program, and more inpatient beds.
As hospitals grow, it can be challenging for people to find their way around. This multi-faceted and multi-phased master facilities planning project aims to address this issue at TriHealth’s Bethesda North Hospital. But improved wayfinding is just one of eight separate projects that will enhance the patient and visitor experience, increase in-patient capacity, and expanding TriHealth’s ability to deliver cardiovascular care.
The main lobby renovation will bring daylight and softly curving shapes into the space for a welcoming feel.
A new addition will house nine catheterization labs and endoscopy department; a new eighth floor overbuild will add 44 Medical Surgery Oncology patient rooms. The project also includes renovations to the emergency department entry, the main entry, lobby, and improvements along the facility’s public corridor.
Accessed from the public corridor, the new cath lab is easy to find thanks to its defined entry and striking overhead light.
The waiting areas in the new cath lab provide visitors with different seating choices that allow them to work, read, or socialize in ways that feel comfortable to them.
[When] you’re in the hospital having surgery, that’s a lot to mentally deal with. Anything that can be done aesthetically to take some of the edge off was a big consideration.
Clearer sightlines and natural anchors along the public corridor will have the effect of shrinking the distance, psychologically, that visitors must travel. From this central corridor visitors can access amenities like registration, the chapel, pharmacy, elevators and the cath lab addition.
Urban medical campuses gain complexity as they grow. Simplifying navigation is a key project goal. Too many decision points make for a confusing journey. By streamlining wayfinding, this renovation will help patients and visitors find their way with more confidence and less stress.
An expanded main entry and improved public corridor will create a unified entrance and enhance access to all areas of the hospital, including the new cath lab addition. Placement of this addition was driven by its proximity to several key elements, including the emergency department, the main entry, and the cardiovascular ICU.
In the new cath lab expansion, exaggerated patterns on windows and walls were inspired by the fine mesh of heart stents. Skylights help brighten long corridors.

Located along the concourse but lacking direct natural light, the renovation of the chapel creatively uses artificial light, curving forms, and warm, wood-like accents to create an atmosphere that is welcoming and calming.

New, larger procedure rooms in the cath lab include state-of-the-art equipment. Room dimensions, equipment, and features are consistent from room to room so surgeons and nurses can easily access what they need.
