Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s New Theatre Featured in American Theatre Magazine

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s (CSC) Otto M. Budig theater was recently featured in the American Theatre Magazine article Appetite for Construction: Builds and Rebuilds Across the U.S.

The article describes how Shakespeare’s Globe in London is one of the inspirations for the new theater. By using materials such as wood formed concrete boards, GBBN was able to simultaneously diffuse sound and give a nod to historical theaters like The Globe.

In the design of the theater, GBBN chose to use raw, unadulterated building materials that embody both the durability of Shakespeare’s plays and the honest, approachable nature of CSC. Concrete, steel and glass reflect a constant becoming inherent to live theatre. Pieces of reclaimed barn wood are also used in the lobby bar, the balcony and pocket doors for the box office. The wood was locally sourced, similar to the way CSC procures their talent. Much like Shakespeare’s own plays, these materials have many interpretations and roles within the building, reinforcing the idea that CSC’s work is never static.
