Cincinnati Union Terminal Commemorated on U.S. Postage Stamp

National historic landmark and beloved local icon, Cincinnati Union Terminal achieved a new “stamp” of approval last week by the United States Postal Service as it was commemorated as a postage stamp, one of five historic train stations across the country to be honored at an unveiling ceremony held at Union Terminal. “Union Terminal has been an integral part of our community’s memories for nine decades and with the release of these commemorative stamps, we get to reintroduce the nation to our local treasure,” said Elizabeth Pierce, President and CEO of the Cincinnati Museum Center at  Union Terminal.

GBBN Associate, Nicholas Cates, was part of the design team charged with renovating and rejuvenating Union Terminal, which turns 90 this year. Nick spent 2016-2018 on-site with the construction team during the restoration, but his love for the building dates to his childhood. “Almost everybody has a Cincinnati Union Terminal story,” said Nick. “The Cincinnati Museum Center opened here when I was in high school. And like many people before me, I was in awe,” he said. “The colors, the scale, the Art Deco-ness of it all. This was the first time I realized that a building could make me feel a certain way.” Nick’s passion for the building led him to a career in architecture where he’s used design to help create exceptional atmospheres and environments that contribute to Cincinnati’s unique feel and flavor.

In addition to the building rehabilitation, we worked with Cincinnati Museum Center leadership to re-imagine the museum-going experience for new generations. Exhibit spaces were reorganized and made more visible, and new galleries, classrooms, laboratories, and dining options have also been added.

“This building has touched millions of people,” noted Cincinnati Union Terminal Historian, Janice Forte. With a new postage stamp, it will touch millions more.
